School's Out! 10 Things to do in Ayrshire Over the Summer Holidays

It’s almost here - nearly two full months of juggling work and keeping the squad entertained 24/7 at the same time.

Childcare costs and endless family days out can end up costing you a LOT of money over the summer months, so plan ahead with some free activities the kids will love too!

We’ve rounded up some of the best events and attractions that are right here in Ayrshire, meaning you can get a wee bit of a lie in before you have to pack the car.

...7am counts as a lie in when you’re a parent, right?

1. Dumfries House

Where is it:

What to do there:
Dumfries house is open to the public 365 days a year completely free of charge, so it’s the perfect location for a family day out or two this summer.

Once you’re there there’s so much to do!

Take a stroll round the estate and take in the beautiful Ayrshire countryside, let the kids run riot in their woodland play park or visit the stunning Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden.

There’s a reasonably priced café and restaurant too, however if you fancy taking your own picnic there’s plenty of benches and tables dotted around the estate to settle down for a bite to eat.

2. Robert Burns Birthplace Museum

What to do there:
The Robert Burns Birthplace museum is just one of the amazing Rabbie Burns attractions in Alloway.

Listen to his words, handle historic objects connected to him and play games that unravel his mysteries in this fantastic family friendly museum.

There’s visual shows, an outdoor learning playpark and café too that serves hot food from 12pm-3pm.

Events and crafts are scheduled at the museum during the summer holidays, you can find full details for each date over on the website.

The museum is also linked to the Robert Burns cottage by a pedestrian pathway, and your entry fee (if you paid) will allow you access to both sites. 

3. Heads of Ayr Farm Park

Where is it:

What to do there:
No matter the weather, there’s always something to do at Heads of Ayr farm park!

There’s plenty of activities including quad biking, bumper boats, an undercover soft play area, giant bouncing pillows and hundreds of animals waiting for you to visit them!

You can buy little bags of animal feed cheaply at the entry desk too which is suitable for most of the animals on the park. One bag per child is more than enough to see them through the full attraction.

There’s also a café and restaurant for snacks and lunches, or plenty of outdoor seating is available in and out of the sun if you’ve packed lunch for the family.

Don’t miss their themed pirate day on 1 st July and superhero day on 11th August too!

4. Picnic in the Park - 9th August

Where is it:
McGavin Park, Kilwinning, KA13 7HL

What to do there:
Bring the family down to McGavin Park in Kilwinning on the 9 th of August for a fun-filled family picnic day from 12pm-4.30pm!

The event is free to attend with lots of attractions and entertainment on throughout the afternoon. You can bring your own picnic, or there’s ice cream, hotdog and fish and chip vendors there too!

Last year there was a range of inflatables, bouncy castles and other fun activities available for kids for £6. Details for this year’s event will be confirmed nearer the time.

Parking for the event is on the grounds of Kilwinning Academy, please avoid parking on residential streets.

If the weather isn’t great on the day, the event will be held indoors at Kilwinning Academy.

5. New Cumnock Outdoor Pool

Cost:
Adult bather: £3
Child (3-15): £1.50
Child (under 3): Free
Spectator: £1.00

Where is it:
New Cumnock, KA18 4AH

What to do there:
This outdoor heated pool was fully refurbished by the Dumfries House Trust in June 2017, and it’s the perfect place for splashing around with the kids this summer!

The pool offers swimming lessons for all ages, mermaid swimming sessions, water sports and public swimming hours - a full timetable for the pool can be found over on their Facebook page or the Dumfries House website. 

6. National Play Day - 1st August

Free entry

Where is it:
Kay Park, Kilmarnock, KA3 7AZ

What to do there:
The national Play Day events celebrate the child’s right to play!

Come on down to the Kay Park in Kilmarnock on Wednesday 1 st August this year for a whole day of exciting activities, messy play, arts & crafts, water play, sports and so much more for children of all ages.

Specific attractions and events happening on the day will be confirmed by East Ayrshire Council’s Vibrant Communities closer to the time, but for now make sure you pop the date in your diary!

7. Culzean Castle & Country Park

What to do there:
Nestled near the Maybole shoreline is the stunning Culzean Castle country park!

Discover over 40 buildings and secret follies in this rambling estate, including the magnificent cliff-top castle itself. There’s plenty of woodland, beaches and parks to explore, including a huge swan pond and play areas too!

There’s plenty of parkland for you to relax with a homemade picnic, or pick up some ice cream, coffee or spot of lunch at one of the castle’s tearooms instead. 

8. The Galleon Centre - Family Night

Kilmarnock, KA1 1QY

What to do there:
If you’re looking for something fun for the whole family to do, then check out the Galleon Centre’s exclusive family nights, every Saturday between 5.30pm-8pm!

There’s swimming, ice-hockey and soft play all included in the price which kids will absolutely love!

Note that the ice rink may be unavailable during ice hockey lessons, and a height restriction of 1.2m applies for the soft play. More information on anything affecting family night can be found on the Galleon’s official Facebook page on Saturday afternoons before family night commences.  

9. Kelburn Castle & Estate

What to do there:
Kelburn estate is based around the site of a 13 th century castle that’s been given a dramatic and colourful make over by a team of Brazilian artists.

The estate is home to dramatic woodland walks, breath-taking gardens and many features of historical interest like statues, monuments and their stunning waterfall pond!

The secret forest, walled garden and indoor play barn are must-sees if you’re spending the day there with the kids. There’s a little café and shop too to pick up some coffee and ice cream, or feel free to take a family picnic to eat on the parkland instead. 

10. Scottish Maritime Museum

Where is it:
Irvine, KA12 8BT

What to do there:
The award winning Scottish Maritime Museum has so much going on for adults and kids!

Discover historic vessels such as Carola, a steam yacht built in 1898 and Spartan - Scotland’s last Scottish built puffer.

You can test out a model foam boat on their indoor boating pond, or sail your own on the outdoor pond! If you book on to one of their tours, you can take a step back in time and visit a typical shipyard worker’s home too.

The Puffers Café offers tea, coffee, cold drinks, cakes and light bites at reasonable prices for the whole family.
